Programming is easy to look at on paper. You can write hard workouts, pair movements together, build progressions, and make something look impressive. But the real question is not whether the program looks good. The real question is whether it creates the adaptation the athlete actually needs.

That is where principles matter.

Principles are what guide the decision-making process behind the program. They are the reason behind the exercise selection, the volume, the intensity, the progression, the fatigue management, and the timing of the training stress. Without principles, programming becomes guessing. It becomes random workouts, random progressions, and random intensity with the hope that something eventually sticks.

Great coaching is not built off randomness. It is built off understanding.

If an athlete needs to build strength, the coach needs to understand what drives strength adaptation. If an athlete is struggling with capacity, the coach needs to understand what energy system is actually limiting them. If an athlete keeps breaking down, the coach needs to understand fatigue, recovery, and minimum effective dose. If an athlete is not transferring training into performance, the coach needs to understand whether the program is actually solving the right problem.

The best coaches do not just ask, “What should this athlete do today?” They ask, “What does this athlete need, why do they need it, and how do we build it in a way they can recover from and progress through?”

That is the difference between programming and coaching.

Programming is the output. Principles are the foundation.

When principles drive programming, the plan has direction. The coach has clarity. The athlete has a better chance of adapting, improving, and performing when it matters most.

The goal is not to write harder training. The goal is to write better training with a deeper understanding of why it works.
